Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will select and assemble rigging gear to be used for various jobs such as wire rope and manila slings/ lashing, shackles, thimbles, turnbuckles, seizing wire, wire rope clamps, chaffing gear, tackle, pull lifts, chain hoists, roller bars, etc. You will select hand tools to be used such as marlin spikes, fids, serving mallets, wire cutters, wrenches, sledges, wedges, zinc ladles, temple sticks and pyrometer. You will load and unload heavy materials, equipment and machinery from railroad cars, trucks, barges and ships. You will load and unload ammunition and explosives from ships and barges at dock; move portable buildings, steel plates, steel shapes, stacks of lumber and antennas. You will secure machinery, grading equipment, trucks and misc materials on railroad flat cars, box cars and trucks for shipment, by means of lashings and turnbuckles. You will inspect and test wire rope slings, monorails, chain hoists, air and electric hoists to determine safety requirements are met. You will ensure ordnance handling equipment and material handling equipment is certified, inspected and tested in accordance with current regulations. You will offload and onload ordnance materials from trucks, rail cars, vessels, and other conveyances using forklifts, manual and mechanized pallet jacks, side loaders, and stacker cranes. You will be required to work with hazardous materials such as industrial solvents of a toxic nature and paints and will be exposed to hazards associated with the use of these items.
